"La informática es muy útil si se utiliza racionalmente, es decir, si los programas son totalmente transparentes y permiten al usuario comprobar la metodología empleada, las fórmulas utilizadas y los resultados obtenidos.

Después de escribir varios libros de cálculo informático de estructuras (ver apartado de libros y programas) hemos creído que sería muy útil un pequeño tratado que contuviera el resumen de las complejas fórmulas de los Eurocódigos pero simplificadas al máximo y muy fáciles de manejar.

Cuando el Ingeniero o el Arquitecto estudian un anteproyecto, deben tener una idea muy clara del orden de magnitud de la estructura en función de las luces y cargas manejadas:

¿Se puede suprimir este soporte?... ¿El canto de la viga será excesivo para las luces previstas?... ¿Qué espesor deberá tener el muro de sótano?.

En la década de los años setenta del siglo pasado, raro era el técnico que no acudía a obra con una pequeña regla de cálculo en el bolsillo y un vademécum memorizado de fórmulas muy simples que le permitían detectar in situ un error grosero o comprobar cualquier duda que le surgiera.

Hoy en día se echa en falta esta agilidad mental para calcular y obtener previamente un orden de magnitud que nos ayude a dimensionar y verificar cualquier tipo de cálculo.

Recuerdo que un amigo que trabajaba como contable, me echaba en cara que yo como ingeniero no supiera de memoria, como él, la tabla de multiplicar del 13,14,17, etc… y me recitaba muy ufano explicándome lo que este pequeño esfuerzo había significado, para su época, detectar errores de contabilidad y ahorrar horas de trabajo.

Pues bien. Este Vademecum pretende ser como esa tabla del 13 que contiene las nociones elementales del cálculo de estructuras y que nos permitirá pisar fuerte aunque no dispongamos en ese momento de un ordenador que nos facilite los cálculos.

Así pues, “ Vade Mecum” = Ven conmigo a este tratado breve que consiste en actualizar, según los Eurocódigos, las fórmulas que el calculista de estructuras debe memorizar o por lo menos tener muy presentes en los cálculos.
